The Social @ Publika Vs Pinot Noir – KL

Published: March 18, 2013 | Category: Argentina, Food, France, New Zealand, Wine

The Social – Publika is #2 outlet after the one in Bangsar Baru which was open 1o years ago. Casual place to meet up with friends and share food and drinks. The menu is covers a lot of different cuisine, french, western, Asian etc… Wine list is extensive and offers many of the best wine region of the world. Ambiance is friendly and reminds us a bit a french brasserie. French dishes are typically Brasserie food.

The challenge for tonight is to try some of the signature dishes with Pinot Noir from 3 different part of the world and different wine making approach. Here are the wines:

Oyster Bay 2011

New Zeland

Pascal Jolivet 2008

Sancerre France

Mariflor 2007

The Social Oriental Platter

The Social Oriental Platter: Thai Chicken Spring roll, Japanese Fish Cake, Lamb Keema Samosa, Social Otak-Otak & Chicken wings with Dips RM 36. Freshly cooked, tasty, crunchy and most importantly, the food is HOT … nice “mise en bouche”. We open Oyster Bay and Pascal Jolivet Sancerre Rouge, the 2 Pinot Noir from cold climate countries. The fruitiness of Oyster Bay reveals the different spices and flavors from the food, even Otak-Otak which was a bit spicy leaves the fruit expressing its aroma… Sancerre Rouge is a bit mellow and is not really expressive.

Sausage & Mash   3 Pinot

Sausage and Mash: Chicken Sausages are always a bit dry vs pork but the Mash is creamy enough to balance the whole thing. Here again Oyster Bay explodes in the mouth. Sancerre is showing some spiciness, peppery notes at the end but still very short.

 Aromatic Crispy Duck Argentina Pop!!

Aromatic Crispy Duck: Signature dish of The Social Publika with pancakes, sweet plum sauce, chili oil, julienne of spring onions and cucumber… So we roll…. We open the 3rd bottle Mariflor 2007. This is the only one of the 3 Pinot Noir from hot climate region. We had it before with Peking Duck and we knew it will be great and it was… Total opposite from Oyster Bay, Mariflor is powerful, big and match perfectly the Duck. Oyster Bay with its fruitiness is not far behind… 2 opposite style and 2 different pleasure. “Un vrai bonheur”

 Boeuf Bourguignon Glasses Bunch

Boeuf Bourguignon: More French… except that this dish is not cooked with red wine as it should be. That is the last chance for Sancerre to show is characteristics with a “sister dish” but sadly it will not be for tonight, unfortunately…. Mariflor and Oyster Bay continue to match so well .

Thanks to our hosts and the Social Publika team. Great job.

Wines: (Imported and distributed by Sunrise Malaysia)

Oyster Bay Pinot Noir 2011, Malborough, New Zealand: Fruit, fruit and fruit, ripe red fruit, cherry, red currant, raspberry, plum…fresh, soft tannin and a lively length… Nice acidity to balance. Wine of pleasure.

Pacal Jolivet Sancerre 2008, France: spicy notes after waiting for long… Maybe this bottle is not at its top…

Mariflor Pint Noir 2007, Uco Valley, Argentina: Lot of fruit, cherry and raspberry with some earthy notes. Tannins are soft for this well-structured wine. Great wine.
